Make sure to get a smoke and carbon monoxide detector and to have a maintenance schedule to change the batteries for them periodically.  If you are in an apartment building and there is a fire extinguisher in the hallways, you may not need a fire extinguisher in the unit, but it doesn’t hurt to purchase a small one for underneath the kitchen sink.  Purchase a small first aid kit and leave it in the kitchen or bathroom.
